The Apple Pushers

"The Apple Pushers," combines two truly American stories - one good and one bad - for one bold film. The film, narrated by Edward Norton, "follows the inspiring stories of five immigrant pushcart vendors who are rolling fresh fruits and vegetables into New York City's food deserts." A good story! But the reason these vendors, and the Green Cart Initiative that created the new strategy that employs them, are necessary is because of the need to combat the challenge of finding fresh food in the inner cities, places where health is plummeting due to poor eating. A bad (and sad) story. But, alas, both American stories.

The Apple Pushers, written and directed by Mary Mazzio, narrated by Edward Norton, and underwritten by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, and produced by Mary Mazzio along with Tom Scott,  follows immigrant street vendors who are rolling fresh fruits and vegetables into the inner cities of New York (where finding a fresh red ripe apple can be a serious challenge). These pushcart vendors, who have immigrated here from all parts of the world for different reasons, and who all have sacrificed so much to come to this country (a near fatal crossing of the Mexican border, as an example) – are now part of a new experiment in New York to help solve the food crisis and skyrocketing obesity rates in the inner city.

The film had a special screening at the Aspen Ideas Festival where thought leaders and policy makers, including Robin Schepper, the head of Mrs. Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, discussed the film and the issues of how to tackle the obesity crisis in low-income neighborhoods across the country. The film not only addresses the issue of food deserts where low income residents have little access to fresh fruits and vegetables – but also the issue of immigrants and what they do for our country.

Jeff Who Lives at Home

Jeff Who Lives at Home

Directors: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Writers: Jay Duplass (screenplay), Mark Duplass (screenplay)
Music by Michael Andrews
Realesed Date: March 16, 2012

Jeff, Who Lives at Home is film directed and written by Jay and Mark Duplass, and starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms, and co-starring Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon. The film premiered on September 14, 2011 at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

The film is about two brothers, Jeff and Pat (played by Segel and Helms, respectively), one a 30 year-old still living in his parents' basement, the other struggling with a failed marriage.

Jeff does indeed live at home with his mother (Susan Sarandon), and he spends most of his days alternately doing nothing and looking for some kind of sign as to what he should be doing. His big brother, Pat (Ed Helms), thinks he's a moron and doesn't want to spend much time with him, which is hard on the already very lonely Jeff. However, over the course of one day, Jeff and Pat are forced to team up to uncover the truth of Pat's wife's possible infidelity through a series of mishaps. However "indie wacky!" that plot might sound, "Jeff Who Lives at Home" is really something quite different. It's the most charming film the Duplasses have made yet, unexpectedly heartwarming and sincere with just the right amount of everyday magic.

Judy Greer as Linda,
Susan Sarandon as Sharon,
Ed Helms as Pat,
Rae Dawn Chong as Carol,

America's Favorite Actor Johnny Depp!

America's Favorite Actor Johnny Depp!

Johnny Depp is perhaps one of the most versatile actors of his day and age in Hollywood. According to The Harris Poll®, a totally scientific online survey of 2,237 completely average American adults, Johnny Depp is, once again, America's favorite actor!

As if the $200+ million domestic gross of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Whatever, Something Something Blah Blah Blah" didn't tell us that already. The runners up in the Harris Poll®? Denzel Washington, who didn't appear in a single movie last year, and Clint Eastwood. Who, at least, is technically still alive.

Also hanging around, further on down the list: Tom Hanks (#4); John Wayne (#5); George Clooney (#6); Sandra Bullock (the only woman in the top ten at #7); Harrison Ford (#8); Will Smith (#9); and, last but not least, Adam Sandler (#10).

All of which suggests that the survey's participants either a) were very old and out of touch, or b) clearly hadn't seen a single movie in 2011, because "Larry Crowne?" "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close?" "Cowboys & Aliens?" "Just Go With It?" "Jack and Jill?" Seriously?? Those were all terrible and/or bombs of epic proportions.

Gone from last year's equally fascinating list are Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts, suggesting America prefers dead actors to living actresses. The troubling, possibly sinister implications of which we'd rather not get into here.

Breaking down the results by demographic, Harris Interactive® was able to determine that Johnny Depp was the favorite of Gen Y (18-34), Gen X (34-46), and Baby Boomers (47-65), while "matures," those aged 66 and older, cited George Clooney as their favorite. Broken down by geographical region, Johnny Depp once again dominated everywhere except the South, which preferred Eastwood. Lastly, liberals and conservatives alike came together over their shared affinity for Tim Burton's favorite muse. Finally! Something we can all agree on! Or not. Moderates, for whatever reason, chose Denzel. Spoil sports.

All Fans guessing with how Anne Hathaway is going to portray Catwoman in upcoming movie The Dark Knight Rises, it seems Catwoman is going to be tougher than ever in the sequel. It appears the 28-year-old actress is wearing a black leather catsuit, with a zip up the front, teamed with a pair of black goggles and lashings of red lipstick. The shot shows Catwoman on a motorbike, which looks very similar to the one owned by Batman in the last film, The Dark Knight Rises.

Very little information has been revealed about the storyline of the new film, in which Hathaway stars as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman. It looks like the Oscars hostess has been working hard to get in shape for the final part of Christopher Nolan's hit trilogy.
