Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a struggling attorney unable to get past his wife’s death in childbirth four years before. Arthur Kipps is facing financial problems along with stress from his employers. He’s sent out to the creepy Drablow house in the middle of a marsh to collect the widow Drablow’s papers after her death, where she had lived with her husband, son Nathaniel, and sister, Jennet Humfrye (Liz White).
The house is creepy, the townspeople are terrified, and after Kipps sees a mysterious woman in black in the graveyard outside the mansion, children in the village start dying in horrific ways. Arthur discovers that Nathaniel drowned during a carriage accident, and Alice's sister Jennet hanged herself. Arthur also discovers notes claiming that Jennet was mentally unstable and was not allowed to care for Nathaniel, who was actually her son, though this fact was hidden by Alice, who raised him as her own. The townspeople want Kipps to leave but he refuses. He has many paranormal experiences with the woman dressed in black and all the children that committed suicide.
